In Memory of Ira Zepp: 1929 - 2009

Ira Zepp The Community Media Center is saddened to hear of the passing of Ira Zepp, teacher, minister, mentor, and educator. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Ira as a student, an acquaintance, or as a friend could not help but be inspired; reminded of how intelligence, courage, humility, and a good heart could co-exist in one soul and inspire others to reach beyond their own prejudices and comfort level to stand on higher ground.

Ira was born November 15, 1929 in Madonna, Maryland. Ira is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Dodd Zepp, their four children Alan, Jody, Paul and Karen and granddaughter Rachael.

Ira was a 1952 alumnus of McDaniel College and earned his Ph.D. in 1971 from St. Mary's Seminary and the University of Baltimore. He joined the faculty of McDaniel - then Western Maryland College - in 1963 serving as Dean of the Chapel until he became a full-time Professor of Religious Studies. During his tenure he was repeatedly recognized as Distinguished Teacher of the Year and received the Maryland Professor of the Year award in 1989. Later in life he became Professor Emeritus of the Religious Studies department.

Ira fulfilled his calling as an ordained Methodist minister by performing wedding ceremonies, presiding over funerals and offering invocations and support to the McDaniel community during pivotal world events. He was a prolific writer and a published author of 12 books.

Throughout his life, Ira stood firm on his ideals, despite opposition from the community in which he lived. He advocated the acceptance of gays, civil rights and women's rights. His beliefs led him to become an activist, marching with civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, Alabama.

Ira Zepp was a truly extraordinary human being who left behind a legacy of deeper understanding and compassion. He will be sorely missed.
